About The Event

This Sunday, August 25, at 7:00 PM CDT, the Canterbury Forum debuts its Fall program series with "How Did We Get Here? Evangelicals in the Age of Trump" presented by Doug Smith, who was raised in evangelical culture and faith and had a 45-year career in evangelical radio, near the end of which he left evangelicalism, finding a new home in the Episcopal tradition. In his talk Doug will outline the history of evangelicalism and explore how it has morphed into a powerful right-wing political force since the 1960s, and most especially since the rise of Donald Trump. Doug's talk lays the foundation on which the Forum's other two programs will rest, the first, on September 22, with Prof. Scott Peters, chair of UNI's Department of Political Science, dealing with religion and the Constitution and the law; the second, on October 27, with Prof. Donna Hoffman, also of UNI, who holds an endowed professorship in political science and will offer election-eve thoughts regarding the role that religion had played in the election.

It is now a cliche to describe yet another election as the most important of our lifetimes, but that doesn't nothing to alter the fact that that simply is what it is. We all are aware of the role religion plays the politics surrounding the election. That makes it all the more important to devote all three Fall programs to the issue of religion in our law, culture, and politics.
